License Plate Breakdown

In Japan at night you may see backlit illuminated plates on a vehicle. They are referred to as jikō-shiki plates, which translates to “character-glowing type". The light-up plates were originally developed not only to illuminate the letters in dark and snowy regions but the heat from the bulb melted the snow to better show the plate. Modern plates like ours are made with LEDs and are much brighter at night than original models.

These Japanese letters indicate the prefecture where the car was registered. Japan is divided into 47 subdivisions or "prefectures". In this case its "Naniwa".

The harigana character is used to help distiguish vehicles.

The classification ID is used to distinguish what type of vehicle it is.

The registration number can be up to 4 numberals.
